Strokes occur when part of the brain suddenly loses its blood supply and dies.
Brain cells require a constant supply of oxygen to survive, if they do not receive ample amount, within seconds, they begin to malfunction, and within minutes they die.
An ischemic stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is blocked or reduced.
Less commonly, strokes are also caused by bleeding into the brain, known as a haemorrhagic stroke. It occurs when a blood vessel in the brain leaks or bursts and causes bleeding in the brain. The blood increases pressure on brain cells and damages them.
Much of the loss that occurs in a stroke is permanent, but some recovery usually does occur in time.
A stroke is a medical emergency. It’s crucial to get medical treatment right away. Getting emergency medical help quickly can reduce brain damage and other stroke complications.
Common symptoms of stroke:
The symptoms of a stroke depend on the area of the brain affected.
- Numbness, weakness or paralysis of one limb i.e., arm, leg or one side of the face is common.
- One side of the mouth may droop when trying to smile.
- Trouble speaking and understanding what others are saying. Confusion, slur words.
- Problems seeing in one or both eyes – blurred or blackened vision in one or both eyes. Or the person may see double.
- A sudden, severe headache.
- Vomiting, dizziness and a change in consciousness.
- Trouble walking – may stumble or lose balance or coordination.
Possible Causes
The main underlying cause is generally atherosclerosis, a condition in which the walls of blood vessels become thickened and irregular.
As atherosclerosis progresses, blood flow through important arteries becomes restricted to a much smaller passage than nature designed.
This narrow passage can then suddenly become blocked, often by a blood clot. When this happens, brain cells downstream of the blockage are suddenly deprived of oxygen (cerebral ischemia).
There are three main causes of stroke.
- An ischemic stroke is caused by a blocked artery in the brain.
- A hemorrhagic stroke is caused by leaking or bursting of a blood vessel in the brain.
- Some people may have only a temporary disruption of blood flow to the brain, known as a transient ischemic attack.
An ischemic stroke occurs when fatty deposits, blood clots or other debris become lodged in the blood vessels in the brain.
Many factors can increase the risk of stroke.
- Being overweight or obese.
- Physical inactivity.
- Heavy or binge drinking.
- Use of illegal drugs such as cocaine and methamphetamine.
- Cigarette smoking or second-hand smoke exposure.
Medical risk factors
- High blood pressure.
- High cholesterol.
- Obstructive sleep apnoea.
- Cardiovascular disease, including heart failure, heart defects, heart infection or irregular heart rhythm, such as atrial fibrillation.
- Personal or family history of stroke, heart attack or transient ischemic attack.
- COVID-19 infection.
- People age 55 or older have a higher risk of stroke.
- African American and Hispanic people have a higher risk of stroke than do people of other races or ethnicities.
- Men have a higher risk than women.
- Hormones — Taking birth control pills or hormone therapies that include oestrogen can increase risk.
