Vasculitis is the inflammation of the blood vessels, the tubes that carry blood around your body.
There are three types of blood vessel in the body:
- Arteries – take blood from the heart to different parts of the body
- Veins – take blood back to the heart from various organs or tissues.
- Capillaries – they are very tiny blood vessels between the arteries and the veins where oxygen and other materials pass from the blood into the tissues.
IgA vasculitis or Henoch-Schonlein purpura is very common in children under 10 than in adults, that causes the small blood vessels in your skin, joints, intestines and kidneys to become inflamed and bleed, causing a reddish-purple rash or purpura.
Common Symptoms
Its symptoms vary according to which part of the body is affected, for example:
- Skin – vasculitis in the skin can cause spots that can burst, leaving open sores (ulcers).
- Nose – crusting inside the nose and nosebleeds. Sometimes the shape of the nose can also change.
- Fingers and toes – Raynaud’s diseases when fingers or toes turn white or blue and may tingle or hurt when exposed to cold conditions.
- Eyes – suddenly affect your vision or cause your eyes to become red or painful.
- Nerves – tingling (pins and needles), pain and burning sensations or weakness in the arms and legs.
- Joints – joints pain or swelling.
- Muscles – muscle aches, and muscles weakness.
- Lungs – coughing and dyspnoea (shortness of breath.)
- Brain – problems like strokes.
- Kidneys – problems passing urine or blood in the urine. Rarely, serious kidney damage can occur.
Other Misc symptoms may include:
- Abdominal pain.
- Feeling unwell.
- Fever, sweats, fatigue and weight loss.
- Headaches, pain in the jaw.
Possible Causes & Risk factors
- There’s no single cause of vasculitis, and in most cases the exact cause is unknown.
- Genetic or inherited.
- Autoimmune disease when our body’s defence system starts targeting our own body by mistake.
- Infections such as with hepatitis.
- After use of certain drugs or medicines – for example propylthiouracil (to treat thyroid disease), and allopurinol for gout treatment, also NSAIDs – ibuprofen, and certain antibiotics et.
- Henoch-Schonlein purpura is slightly more common in males than in females.
